So… Who Are We, Anyway?
That’s actually an important question.
Everyone travels differently, and knowing a little about how we travel will help you decide if the tips, itineraries, and stories you’ll find here are going to be useful to you. If our travel styles don’t line up, that’s okay—but we’d rather be upfront about it.
Meet Chad & LeAnne
We’re both college professors, lifelong learners, and enthusiastic travelers. With the college calendar and grown kids, we now have a little more flexibility to explore.
This season of travel didn’t magically appear overnight, however. Before academia, Chad worked in the medical field, and when our kids were growing up, time and money were much tighter. Travel still mattered to us, though, which meant getting creative.
Very creative.
For example, we have:
-
Collected aluminum cans on desert trips to pay for gas
-
Packed breakfast and lunch into suitcases more times than I can count
-
Brought hot chocolate packets into Disneyland because restaurants would give free cups of hot water
(Yes, this was back when annual Disneyland passes cost $135…. total. Times have changed….)
Our Travel Philosophy: Travel More for Less
We live by one simple idea: the more money we save, the more we get to travel.
We’d rather spend our budget on experiences—hiking, scuba diving, tours, adrenaline-pumping activities, learning local history, discovering weird roadside stops—than on luxury resorts or $200 meals. If five-star hotels and fine dining are your travel priorities, you probably won’t find many recommendations here.
And that’s okay.
But if you like:
-
National parks and public lands
-
Hiking, nature, and outdoor adventures
-
History and learning as you go
-
Scuba diving and unique experiences
-
Quirky, off-the-beaten-path attractions
-
Stretching your travel dollar as far as possible
…then you’re in the right place.
How We Actually Travel
Our style is practical, flexible, and budget-conscious:
-
Tent camping and RV camping
-
Budget-friendly hotels and unique stays
-
Local, no-frills restaurants
-
Points, miles, and travel rewards
-
Occasional all-inclusive resorts (only when the deal is too good to pass up)
Chad thrives on the hunt—finding the best deals, stacking discounts, and figuring out how to make trips happen for less. Over the years, that’s turned into a pretty impressive toolbox of money-saving strategies, which we’re happy to share.
Real Experiences, Not Algorithms
In a world overflowing with AI-generated content and sponsored recommendations, we still believe there’s value in hearing from real people who’ve actually been there.
We have no vested interest in specific products, destinations, or organizations. We’ll always be honest about:
-
What worked
-
What didn’t
-
What we’d absolutely do again
-
What we’d skip next time
Everything here is based on our experiences. They may not match everyone else’s—and that’s okay. Travel is personal.
Why We Share
Learning from others has shaped how we travel, and Finding the Farmers is our way of paying that forward. If something we’ve learned helps you plan a trip, save money, or try something new, then this site is doing its job.
We hope you find a few nuggets here that encourage you to get out there and explore this amazing world.
