Going Nuts in Southern New Mexico: A Stop at PistachioLand

If you find yourself anywhere near Alamogordo, New Mexico, PistachioLand is one of those gloriously quirky roadside stops that’s impossible to ignore—and honestly, you shouldn’t try. Where else can you grab a bag of green chile pistachios, sample sweet local wine, and snap a selfie with a 30-foot-tall pistachio?

Yes, it’s officially the World’s Largest Pistachio, and it’s exactly as weird and wonderful as it sounds.

PistachioLand was founded by the McGinn family and sits on a 111-acre working farm where pistachios and grapes are grown right on site. The giant pistachio itself was built by Tim McGinn in honor of his father, Tom McGinn—the original founder and a man who clearly appreciated classic roadside Americana. Knowing that makes the whole place feel even more charming.

What to Do at PistachioLand

Take the Orchard Tour
For a small fee (currently around $4 per person), you can hop on a short motorized tour through the pistachio orchards and vineyards. It’s surprisingly interesting, even if you’ve never once wondered how pistachios grow—and it gives you a real appreciation for the farming behind the snacks.

Sample All the Pistachios
The gift shop is a flavor playground. You’ll find samples of just about every pistachio flavor imaginable, including:

  • Green chile
  • Garlic
  • Ranch
  • Spicy dill pickle
  • Margarita limón
  • Habanero
  • Cinnamon sugar

If you think you don’t like flavored pistachios, this place may change your mind.

Sip Some Local Wine
PistachioLand also offers free wine tastings of wines produced on site using their own grapes. The wines lean toward the sweet side, making them approachable and fun—especially for casual wine drinkers.

Don’t Skip the Ice Cream
Before you leave, swing by the ice cream parlor. The homemade pistachio ice cream is the star, and for good reason—they make roughly 275 gallons of it each week. The scoops are generous, the flavor is rich, and it’s the perfect treat on a hot New Mexico day.

Where Quirky Meets Delicious

PistachioLand is the perfect example of what we love at Finding the Farmers: a working farm that invites visitors in, shares its story, and doesn’t take itself too seriously. It’s educational without being boring, touristy in the best way, and rooted in family farming traditions.

Whether you’re a pistachio superfan, a lover of quirky roadside attractions, or just looking for a fun stop between White Sands and Alamogordo, PistachioLand is absolutely worth pulling over for.

Pro tip: Even if you only have 15 minutes, stop anyway. A photo with the world’s largest pistachio is a travel memory you didn’t know you needed.
