Sitting Bull Falls- A Hidden Oasis

If someone told you there was a lush, spring-fed waterfall hiding deep in the desert of southern New Mexico, you might be skeptical—but Sitting Bull Falls is the real deal.

Located about an hour west of Carlsbad and tucked inside Lincoln National Forest, Sitting Bull Falls Recreation Area feels like a secret oasis. A year-round waterfall tumbles roughly 150 feet down limestone cliffs into crystal-clear, green pools, creating a scene that feels wildly out of place in the surrounding desert landscape.

A short, ADA-accessible trail leads you right to the falls, and rounding the final bend is one of those wow moments. The canyon walls provide shade, plants thrive in every direction, and the cool water is fantastically refreshing. Nearby, the limestone walls have been eroded into tunnel-like alcoves, reminiscent of the famous “Subway” in Zion National Park.

And yes—you can swim! Just don’t expect solitude. Even on a midweek visit in June, plenty of people were enjoying the water. That said, the drive is absolutely worth it. We only spent a couple of hours relaxing and exploring the canyon, but Sitting Bull Falls would be a fabulous place to bring a picnic and a blanket or chairs for a full day of relaxation.
